I’ve been noticing a lot more plaid in the Midwest than I’m used to these days. And I’m liking the trend! What seems to be a classic pattern in the Northwest – this cross hatch of colors is a staple to any American’s wardrobe and it seems hotter than ever. Just this past weekend I enjoyed Vietnamese sandwiches with friends – and three of the six of ‘em were wearing plaid!
So when deciding on the “Item of the Week” the choice seemed easy: the Grunge Plunge dress. What I refer to as a Pierogi Picnic classic, this adorable design fuses the charm of a vintage camisole with the rough and tumble tough of a men’s shirt, giving a softness to an otherwise beard and brawn look. It’s a piece I have been making now for over 3 years and the look of the opposing fabrics is something I never grow tired of! And seemingly – neither do you – as I continue to sell out of these dresses in shows season after season.
Welcome to my latest series – “Styling!” I will be sharing favorite outfits of the month, complete with notes on everything from inspiration to wardrobe details. In this first feature, what I’ve dubbed “The French Sailor,” I’ve combined a stretchy striped top that I scored from Crossroads with a thrifted skirt that I took in so it can sit high on my waist. The sweater tights, whose rainbow colored lint don’t come across in the pics, are a new favorite of mine from Target. The vintage taupe boots I purchased from Etsy and the navy stud earrings were a gift for the holidays. My favorite details? By far the scalloped under-layer of the skirt, vegan skinny belt and the beaded soft pink applique across the top of the shirt.
I made a trip up to Evanston yesterday and took a stroll down Main Street. I love the feel of the blocks with the narrow street and local mom and pop shops. I peeked into Dave’s Rock Shop and perused the ancient fossil collections and bought a box of fragmented pyrite. I also swung through Healthy Green Goods to scope out their new shop layout. But the real mission of my journey lay just ahead – Vogue Fabrics.
Whenever I visit Vogue I know I’m in for a long stay. I have to block out at least three hours of time for each excursion. My goal that day was to find elastic for new spring headbands – but I quickly found myself distracted by their wall of designer and vintage buttons and instantly planned my Saturday project: new button earrings!!!!
